Bruce Prichard named as Executive Director of Smackdown: What does this mean?

WWE has announced that Bruce Prichard will be replacing Eric Bischoff as the Executive Director of Friday Night Smackdown.

WWE released the following announcement this afternoon:

Bruce Prichard has been announced as the Executive Director of Friday Night SmackDown, reporting directly to WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon.

Prichard will oversee the creative development of Friday Night SmackDown on FOX and ensure integration across all platforms and lines of business, replacing Eric Bischoff.

Prichard brings nearly 40 years of experience in sports-entertainment with an extensive background in character development and creative storytelling. During his career, Prichard has served in a variety of roles, including announcer, producer, agent and on-screen personality. Earlier this year, Prichard returned to WWE as a member of the company’s creative team.

Please join WWE in congratulating Prichard on his new role and catch Friday Night SmackDown at 8/7 C on FOX.

No word on if Eric Bischoff will remain with WWE. However, some are reporting that the former Executive Director of Smackdown is indeed finished with the company. Bischoff had been in the role for only 4 months after being hired in June of 2019. It was reported that Bischoff’s role would partially consist of being an intermediary between WWE and FOX executives in preparation for Smackdown’s FOX debut on October 4, 2019.

However, it has been reported by some that Bischoff has had little to no influence on Smackdown’s creative direction since his hiring in July. Reports of a Bischoff hire being found sleeping on his first day with the organisation as well as Bischoff spending most of his time in catering according to sources in WWE have been stated by the likes of Dave Meltzer.

Many suggested the lack of creative influence being due to Bischoff getting acclimated to his new WWE surroundings as well as familiarizing himself with the WWE product and Superstars as it has been reported that Bischoff was not aware of many current WWE Superstars and programmes prior to his hiring. However, it seems that this acclimation period has not gone to plan as his being replaced my Bruce Prichard would suggest.
