On This Day 14 years ago…No Mercy 2005

On this day 14 years ago, No Mercy emanated from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

A Smackdown brand exclusive event, the pay per view drew a capacity of 7,000 fans at the Toyota Center.

In the main event of the evening, Batista defeated Eddie Guerrero in singles match to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Going into the event the storyline that followed this match involved Eddie Guerrero “turning good” after his recent feud with Rey Mysterio and Mysterio’s family in which Guerrero stated his new addiction was manipulation.

After being named Number One Contender by Network Executive Palmer Cannon, Guerrero stated he had “no more hate in him” and that he hoped that Latino Heat and World Champion Batista could become friends.

Over the next several weeks, Batista and Guerrero competed in Tag Team matches and backstage segments highlighting their blossoming friendship but also hinting that Guerrero may not have changed his ways and that this “New Eddie Guerrero” may just be more of Guerrero’s manipulative behaviour.

In the match, there was an opportunity for Guerrero to cheat when then referee was knocked down. Eddie grabbed a steel chair and looked ready to hit The Animal with it. However, Guerrero thought against it and decided not to use the illegal weapon. This suggested that Guerrero had indeed changed his ways.

In the finish of the match Eddie Guerrero would go for his signature Frog Splash only for Batista to roll out of the way. Batista would then hit a spinebuster for the three count and victory to retain his championship.

This would be Eddie Guerrero’s last Pay Per View match with WWE. Tragically Eddie Guerrero would unexpectedly pass away due to heart failure on November, 13 2005.

Here’s to Latino Heat on his birthday. Viva La Raza!
