On this day 6 years ago…WWE Battleground 2013

On this day 6 years ago, WWE Battleground 2013 emanated from the first Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York.

In one of the featured matches of the show, Cody Rhodes & Goldust (with “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes defeated WWE Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns (with WWE United States Champion Dean Ambrose.

Due to the pre-match stipulations, Cody Rhodes & Goldust were reinstated to WWE after winning the match. However, if Cody Rhodes & Goldust would have lost the match, both Cody Rhodes & Goldust would have been terminated from WWE. In addition to this, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes would have been terminated from his position as a trainer at WWE’s then developmental territory, NXT.

This was the culmination of a storyline between The Rhodes Family and The Authority. Previously, after losing a match to then WWE Champion Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes had been fired by WWE COO Triple H. In an attempt to win his brother’s job back, Goldust challenged Randy Orton in a match but was ultimately unsuccessful.

Dusty Rhodes then pleaded with The Authority to give his Son’s job back. However, The Authority then forced The Big Show to knock out The American Dream with a KO punch or be attacked with steel chairs by The Shield.

Ultimately, The Authority agreed to give The Rhodes Family their jobs back if they could defeat The Shield at Battleground. But if they did not leave Battleground victorious then both Rhodes brothers would NEVER work for WWE again and in addition, Dusty Rhodes would lose his job as an NXT trainer.

What are your memories of this match?
